October 2008:

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in women. According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, every three minutes one woman will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

While the causes of breast cancer are not fully understood, research has shown that only 5 to 10% of breast cancers are due to heredity. This means there is great hope for reducing your risk. You can substantially reduce your risk by making positive changes to your lifestyle.

Consider these suggestions:

> Lose excess weight.
> Be physically active, exercise lowers your estrogen levels, fights obesity and pumps up your immune system.
> Limit your intake of alcohol.
> Quit smoking.
> See your healthcare professional as advised for a breast exam or mammogram.
> Perform monthly breast self-exams and pay attention to any changes.
> If your mother, sister or daughter have been diagnosed with breast cancer, you are at a higher risk. Inform your doctor about your family health history.
> Eat a well-balanced diet. Try eating fruits and vegetables as well as low fat & high fiber foods.
> Soak up the suns rays. Spending 10 to 15 minutes two times per week in the sun without sunscreen allows the sun’s rays to penetrate the skin and synthesize vitamin D.
> Get vitamin D from food like eggs, vitamin D–fortified foods milk, soy milk, and orange juice, and cereals and oily fish.
> Avoid trans fats and stick to good fats, such as olive oil, oily fish avocados, and walnuts.
