Maintaining Your New Year’s ResolutionIt’s a new year and time to make those infamous New Year’s resolutions. Did you know that 40 to 45% of us will make at least one resolution this year? Most of our resolutions are about weight loss, exercise, and smoking cessation. How many of us will truly stick to the solutions long term? In fact, aren’t New Year’s resolutions meant to be broken?
Unfortunately, three quarters of our resolutions will be maintained after only one week and less than half after 6 months. My hope is that they won’t be broken. To be successful with your resolutions remember these tips: 1. Choose simple, realistic goals. 2. Write your goals down and develop a plan to meet your goals. 3. Reset your goals once you have met them 4. Avoid taking extreme actions to make the resolutions work.
Let’s focus on weight loss. Unfortunately there are no super foods, no magic answers to weight loss and no good or bad foods. The real key to success is about balancing the calories you consume with the calories you burn. You’ve heard the phrase, “Rome wasn’t built in a day” and the same is for developing sensible lifestyle habits leading to weight loss.
Often times, we turn to fad diets for weight loss. A fad diet is a short-term quick fix that actually may set many dieters up for weight-loss failure. Red flags indicating a fad diet include:
Think about how you felt when you were on a fad diet in the past. If your answer includes words like deprived, irritable, stressed, cranky and tired, maybe you’re ready to give up fad diets for good. Remember that moderation isn’t deprivation. Moderation means enjoying treats like ice cream, chocolate or chips less frequently or in smaller amounts while choosing healthy foods most of the time. Fad diets are about making drastic overnight changes whereas a fad-free diet focuses on one step at a time, until each step has become a normal, comfortable part of your routine.
Are you ready to take the road to better health? For reliable and sensible information, consult your in-store nutritionist, Mary Jo for personalized health recommendations. Maintain your new year’s resolutions throughout the year and not for just one week.
